| Well, it's Dan Brown ... - (3/5) | ... so you really should know what you're going to get by now.
If not, well it's more of the same - average writing, and (almost certainly) full of historical inaccuracies, but an enjoyable read nonetheless.
Proper Popcorn reading, and that's not a bad thing. |
| Not disapointed! - (4/5) | Very well written and did not disapoint. it was almost of a similar standard to his previuos novels, perhaps just a notch below! But when they are some of the most read ever the standard must be hard to maintain.
Story flows with some unexpected twists. Recommended. |
| Dont waste your money - (1/5) | The worst book I've read. I loved the Da vinci code and even deception point but this was just so bland. The davinci code made me buy his later books which got progressively worse until this one. The lost symbol was the final nail in the coffin. I wont be buying any more Dan brown books which is really sad because had he innovated he could have been a great writer. Maybe I am being too tough? I'm comparing him to literary giants like Steinbeck who created alchemy with words every time. |
| Masonic mumbo-jumbo - (2/5) | I'm not sorry I didn't rush to buy the hardback of this. Just as THE DA VINCI CODE lacked the exhilaration that made ANGELS & DEMONS so compelling, THE LOST SYMBOL lacks the intricacy that made the Grail quest engagingly plausible.
And it lacks pace. The plot stops dead every few pages while we examine myths and symbols, the architecture of Washington DC or the hidden agenda of the Founding Fathers. Robert Langdon's race to save his friend Solomon's life by unlocking the secret of a Masonic pyramid only takes one night, but that night requires just over 666 pages (there's spooky for you!). Most readers will easily guess the identity of the demonic villain Mal'akh, whose tattooed body calls to mind Thomas Harris's Red Dragon, so the book also lacks suspense.
Twice as long as it needed to be, THE LOST SYMBOL is over-written and under-edited. Brown tells us several times that the Freemasons are the guardians of a Great Secret that will one day open humanity's eyes to the Wisdom of the Ancients. After reams of mumbo-jumbo the book ends with a kind of New Age Sermon on the Mount. Duh.
