| Amazon Editorial Review | Harry Bosch's latest case sees him alone, without backup - and this time it's personal |
| nine dragons - (4/5) | If you enjoy michael connelly books then theres no need to put much. He writes brilliant books every one Ive read has been great. I have not actually read this yet as I am still reading another of his books. |
| Michael Connelly continues his downward slide - (1/5) | As an avid reader of Michael Connelly books I must say that Echo Park, The Scarecrow and Nine Dragons are well short of his best work.
The problems as I see them are
Short on words - larger fonts, generous margins and not that many pages to start with. It feels like a bit of a con.
Short on basic plot - hence not so many words in the book. I normally think that when a TV show/book or whatever resort to taking the main character abroad then they are scraping the barrel for ideas.
Short in interest for the reader - the plots are either straightforward and/or unbelievable when much of the pleasure and interest in his books are the thoughts and ideas that may or not be incidental to the plot. Ambiguity, dead ends, red herrings and doubt are essential in these books.
In the end I think Michael Connelly may need to take a bit more time before he even starts writing his next books as he is now just skimming the surface when, at his best, he went far deeper to far greater effect.
He still has one of the best bodies of work out there so all is not lost.

| harry bosch at his best - (5/5) | i have to admit i have loved Harry Bosch since first reading a Michael Connelly novel many years ago which i picked up just for "something to read"though had never read crime novels, i have now read ( i think) all of michael connelly's books ,i particularly like the Harry Bosch series, and its been a while since the last one as Connelly retired him, so looked forward to this new one,Harry is as sharp as ever , though this time it is personal , Another gripping novel. looking forward to the next one . |
| Bosch goes Bauer - (4/5) | Bosch goes Bauer in this latest book, with a faint resemblance to the movie Taken. |
| Hugely disappointing - (1/5) | I have been an avid Michael Connelly for many years and have read all of his books. This one, however, whilst starting well, was hugely disappointing. This is not the Harry Bosch that I have grown to know and love; and, in my view his actions towards the conclusion of the story, are totally out of character. I thought at times that Harry had become Jack Reacher (not that I have anything against Lee Child's novels which I also read and enjoy) but Bosch has never been a gung-ho hero and I don't see why he needs to turn nto one now. |
