| Paul Lester, London | | Brilliant - (5/5) | This is an amazing and incredibly moving story of a secret agent in France during the war. Not only did he walk across the pyrenees on crutches and create his own secret army, but he also survived torture and escaped from buchenwald concentration camp. It's very easy to read and includes a lot of interesting background on the resistance in France. |
| Description | After a childhood in England, Harry Peulevé is recruited for SOE F Section by Maurice Buckmaster. His first mission is to set up a circuit (SCIENTIST) near Bordeaux. Harry breaks his leg on landing and, after numerous adventures and close escapes, crosses the Pyrennes on sticks in December 1942. He is imprisoned, escapes and eventually reaches the British Embassy, Madrid. He arrives back in London with Violette Szabo. He is sent back to France to establish a Maquis group. Again initially he avoids capture despite their group being infiltrated. He hasconsiderable success with the Maquis as well as running an escape route. He is betrayed and captured on 21 March 1944. Tortured at Avenue Foch by the Gestapo he gives no information away.
