This book wasn't right for me. I have an 11 year old son with coeliac disease and need to do family meals and baking. The recipes in this book are mostly too fancy for me - too complicated, too many ingredients, ingredients I can't easily get (chestnut flour, potato flour, rice flour) and the recipes are more for 'chef-style' entertaining (pheasant, red mullet...). There are too many recipes in here which are soups, salads and main meals which are easier to do gluten-free anyway (eg roast chicken, risotto), and could do with more cake/biscuit/pudding recipes where I need more help.

Ive never had a recipe book by Phil Vickery before and don't think I will again. Although there was a good explanation of Coeliac disease at the beginning of the book, I just wasn't keen on the recipes. A lot of them were recipes that wouldn't have gluten in them anyway and could be found in any cookbook. What I personally wanted from this cookbook were recipes that would normally have gluten in them (bread, cakes, batters etc) which had been converted to gluten free. Whilst the book did contain some of these, I didn't really buy it for fish or meat recipes which are gluten free anyway.

However, I was put off the book after making the millionaires shortbread. Although the shortcrust pastry at the bottom was really nice, the caramel had far too much sugar in it and I couldn't eat it. Even my daughter, who has a sweet tooth, found it too sickly! I think that when you have made one recipe from a book that has failed then it puts you off making any more.

This book was informative without being over complicated or technical. It has some wonderful receipes with easy to find ingredients that everyone in the family will enjoy.
The g-f pastry recipe is especially good.
I look forward to working my way through all the receipes.

Bought as a Christmas Present for my nephew and his partner. Had a quick look through myself -it seems a good book

My boyfriend bought me this book for my birthday last year, and I haven't had a bad recipe from it yet!
What I love most is that it isn't just about substituting various flours to try make the wheat-free versions of recipes... it's about lovely food which happens to be gluten free.
