Amazon Customer Reviews:

Fantastic - (5/5)
This book starts off with a long essay which seems to contradict the factual nature of the rest of the book, but is in fact an eye opening view into free and unpretencious art. It doesnt tell you how you must appreciate art and bombard you with symbolism but rather informs on the ways you can enjoy art in an open and creative way.

I bought this book to help me with my masters project, but it ended up rekindling a love for art that had been lost through years of deadlines and hand-ins.

A great book. Buy it.

FANTASTIC INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF PAINTING - (5/5)
Bolton's book takes the reader through various art periods using detailed and informative chapters with exciting images that describe each movement perfectly. As well as giving the reader extensive background information on each artist, he explains the image by revealing hidden messages readers would not easily detect.
The book is interesting to read and look at, and not too overloaded with unnecessary details, but informative enough to be gripping. It suits people with or without knowledge of art as it is written in a lively and unpretentious fashion. This book draws the reader in because of its sassy appearance and content.

Great book, informative and interesting - (5/5)
I read this book and thought it was a fantastic read. I was afraid it was going to be just another Art History type book, but I threw all those preconceptions out once I started to read it. It is informative yet retains your interest completely and is usefully illustrated as well.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, experts and newbies alike to the world of painting. A brilliant crib for those who should know and have forgotten. A wonderful book for anyone to read!

Amazing intro to the life of art - (5/5)
A friend recommended this book to me as a cool and easy-to-read intro to art - its certainly that, and a great deal more. I had always been 'into painting' but needed a catalyst to get my passion back for the art world. This book really helped. It explains the reasoning behind certain styles and techniques without being pompous. It takes you through all the famous paintings and iconic painters with clear prose and excellent prints. Surprisingly it also touches on philosophy, religious ideas and is a very interesting history of the world. Buy it!
