The Hummingbird Bakery is the destination bakery for Londoners with a passion for great cakes. This book presents recipes, from the chefs of the bakery, a delicious range of 60 bakes, from deliciously light cupcakes with pretty buttercream frosting to moist chocolate layer cakes and zesty lemon meringue pie.

Don't get me wrong - the cup capes are delicious - but there are so many recipies in this book where the quantities are out that I really wouldn't bother. Unless you enjoy scraping off the bottom of your cooker, again...

I gave this book to a friend for her 21st Birthday. She continues to rave about the delicious cakes she has made from this book. She is cooking her way through the whole book!! A "must buy" for cooks who love baking and serving delicious cakes.

I have baked most of the recipes in this book and they are all totally amazing. The cupcakes are the best I've tasted (even if I do say so myself!) with sponge so light and airy you'd be forgiven for not realising you've eaten anything. They are a huge hit when I take them into the office. The banana bread is another favourite as are the peanut butter and chocolate cookies.

I have recently tried the New York Cheesecake recipe that I have been putting off for ages as I always thought it would be a lot of hard work for little reward but it was really easy to make and tastes gorgeous, sad to say, it did not last long and I'm now pining for another spoonful.

This book is far better then it's rivals such as the Primrose Bakery (lots of faffing with different ingredients) and Eat Me as it's recipes are straightforward, no hassle and quick. I find the other books tend to basically be different icings and toppings whereas Hummingbird experiments with different sponges and covers layer cakes, muffins, cupcakes, biscuits, bars etc. Everything I've made comes out exactly like the pictures in the book so you can wow your friends with your culinary skills.

I cannot recommend this book more highly.

Highly recommended book... I have one myself and found recipes easy to follow with good end results. Have just ordered 2 more copies for presents.

Yep - another person wondering what on earth was going on when they published this book.

The recipes simply don't work which suggests that no one bothered to test them in a domestic setting. Either the bakery or the publisher simply hasn't done the basics. And that is wrong. People are going to waste their money on recipes that are wrong.

If like most people you stick to the recipes and don't have the confidence to make MAJOR changes, the results come as a huge disappointment. Most of the recipes don't look complicated, and they shouldn't be - but the quantities, cooking times and temperatures are all over the place. It's only when you find yourself confronted with a gloopy mess, a cake that refuses to rise - or even set, dough so stiff you could use it to fill walls, or mountains of meringue or batter that you realise there was a very good reason the book has been sitting gathering dust for so long.

Hummingbird have quietly issued a set of corrections on their site for some of the recipes, but I've had problems with many of those not listed on their pages, so reluctantly I'm not bothering with the book again. Instead I've switched to the Magnolia Bakery cookbook for when I want to do some fancy cakes or muffins.
